    Minnesota National Park Systems

On Episode 4, we’re talking about the Minnesota National Park systems, including the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and Voyageurs National Park. We love National Parks and we’re thankful for these protected areas in Minnesota and across the country. (Did you know there are over 400?!) You can explore pristine beauty, experience pretty much every kind of recreation, and learn about everything from the wildlife to history.

National Park Week is in April every year and runs special events for a week. It kicks off with a free-entry day and is followed by nine days of celebrations, each with a theme.Β Additionally, this is a great way to learn more about each park and about the National Park Service’s programs to preserve natural and cultural heritage and provide recreational opportunities. You can join the fun in person or online at nps.gov.

    St. Croix National Scenic Riverway

The river was Minnesota’s first to be designated in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, managed by the National Park Service and designated in 1968. The Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway includes the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers and makes over 200 miles of clean water among wild and scenic beauty. From the heavily wooded banks, bluffs, cliffs, and pinnacles, and ever-changing landscapes, there is so much beauty and wonder to take in.

St. Croix National Scenic Riverway Things To Do

Exploring the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway also includes the St. Croix Scenic Byway, State Parks, hiking, and historic towns with plenty of local gems to discover. Of course, this is what our podcast is all about and we have some other great blogs for you to explore. Read more about Taylors Falls HERE and find our St. Croix Valley itinerary HERE.

    Taylors Falls Boat Tours

Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours offers authentic paddlewheel excursions on the St. Croix 7 days a week, May through October. Cruises are a great way to see the river and include a narrated tour of the history and rock formations. There are family-friendly tours throughout the day but our favorite is the sundown cruise.Β The Boats include the Taylors Falls Queen and the Taylors Falls Princess, both featuring enclosed lower levels and open upper decks to enjoy the fresh air and views.

Tip: Go early and hang out on the Red Rock Patio, where you can enjoy a charcuterie board and wine while taking in the views. You can also order ahead and have the food waiting onboard. Plus, watch their calendar for live music events!

The third week of April is also National Volunteer Week. If you’re interested in getting involved in preserving the St. Croix, check out the Wild Rivers Conservancy.Β  Their mission: a thriving watershed, forever accessible, scenic and wild.

    Voyageurs National Park

Voyageurs National Park is in Northern Minnesota near the Canadian border, with over 218,000 acres (40% is water!) and also borders the million acres of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Hear Park Ranger, Mark Miller’s Interview

Voyageurs National Park offers something for everyone including canoeing, camping, fishing, hiking, houseboating, shopping in surrounding towns, birding, photography, and is a Dark Sky certified park. This park is special because you can truly escape the crowds and spend time alone among nature if that’s what you choose. There are many ways to enjoy this treasure of a park.

Adopt a Rescue Dog – Ruff Start Rescue

We are partnering with Ruff Start Rescue and Best Friends Animal Society to feature one adoptable dog each month. We are passionate about rescue dogs and have two of our own, the Explore Local Together mascots, Allen and Carol.

    Meet Ace Odin!

Ace has been in rescue since May 2022. He is a Mixed American Staffordshire Terrier and American Bulldog and is a little over 3 years old.

He is all about the good vibesβ€”treats, lap snuggles (he’s convinced he can fit on any lap even though he weighs 96 pounds), family car rides, and yard shenanigans. He loves relaxing, walks, playing with toys and chewing on bones. He’ll do best in a home with older kids (maybe above 10) and is not the biggest fan of cats. He has lived with dogs in the past and have done well.

Do you think Ace could be the pup for you?! Visit Ruff Start Rescue HERE plus check out their volunteer opportunites.

Poplar River Condos At Lutsen, Minnesota

    Content Creation Photo Shoot

Winter on the North Shore in Minnesota

The Poplar River Condos at Lutsen photo shoot was amazing for multiple reasons. First, I spent time in an incredibly beautiful location with one of my favorite people. Sitting on the private deck in the crisp air with Lutsen Mountain behind us and Lake Superior in front of us was a top ten moment.

Keep us in mind to capture your story!

Second and more, the sub-zero temps allowed Mother Nature to put on a show for us. We got bluebird skies, sea smoke, crashing waves, and one of the best sunsets that I’ve ever seen. The sunset was so bright and colorful. It seemed to last forever in the North Shore’s never-ending sky.

Lodging on the North Shore in Lutsen, Minnesota

Poplar River Condos at Lutsen are something special. You know how sometimes it’s hard to put an experience into words; it’s a feeling, a vibe. That is Poplar River Condos.

Location, location, location. Poplar is located at the base of Lutsen Mountain. Just 20 miles southwest of Grand Marais and 8 miles northeast of Bluefin Bay Resort (your stay includes access to Bluefin’s activity program). In the winter, the moment you turn into the property, you can see Lake Superior in her grandeur. Once you arrive at your condo, each unit has a unique and beautiful nature and Lake Superior view.

My favorite feature of the condos is the windows and the abundant natural light. It feels like you are connected to nature even while staying cozy by the fireplace. And what a sight to wake up to!

You can choose from one-bedroom to three-bedroom options when combining the units, offering something for everyone. Each unit has a private deck, kitchen or kitchenette, fireplace, and access to trails and Lake Superior.

🐾🐾 Some of the Poplar River Condos are pet-friendly!

It’s been a long time since I spent time on the shore in the winter. To my surprise, I can’t recommend it enough! It was such a cozy and relaxing stay. Plus work-wise, the internet worked great. Treat yourself to a change of scenery and enjoy.

Thank you for having me, Poplar River Condos! I can’t wait to visit again. ❀️

Jesus Christ SUPERSTAR Rocks the Stage

Wow! The Olivier Award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar is both exhilarating and conflicting. My body wanted to dance while my mind felt frozen in the weight of the story. The story is set in the final weeks of Jesus Christ’s life, told from Judas’s perspective.

From the moment the show starts with the squeal of the electric guitar and the cast’s dramatic entrance from the side doors, the audience is locked in. It has the feel of an electric stadium concert mixed with rock opera musical. I had never fully listened to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s famous score until the show and am now a fan. Did you know that it was the 1971 Billboard Album of the Year?

Elvie Ellis (Judas) with the North American tour company and Faith Jones (Mary) of Jesus Christ Superstar. Photo by Evan Zimmerman for MurphyMade.

Jack Hopewell (Jesus) fills the theater with emotion, giving a full understanding of Jesus’ love, pain, and the last days of his life. His voice resonates through the theater, especially the high notes, sending chills up your spine. Opposite Jesus, Elvie Ellis (Judas) creates a perfect push-and-pull, emoting how deeply conflicted Judas was about his decision. The intensity between them is palpable. Every time Faith Jones (Mary) takes the stage, it is a breath of fresh air and comfort through the chaos of Jesus and Judas. Her voice is so beautiful and magical. It’s like a warm, needed hug.

The whole returning touring cast was all star! The confidence and ease on the stage seemingly working and moving as one is incredible to watch. I loved the simplicity of the set design, one building with windows into the soul of the stage. The windows are strategically used to highlight different actors and scenes including the guitar player and orchestra. A large cross laying, almost as if it fell through the building, is very powerful.

The end and cruciifixion was difficult for me to watch, given everything going on in the world. Sometimes it feels like we haven’t evolved. Group mentality, not knowing the whole story and believing half truths from unreliable sources, judging, when will it stop?

I love when a production makes you you feel a plethora of feelings while at the same time being so entertaining. You will be swept away into the music and the story. And hopefully all of us walk away wanting to share more love, respect, and understanding.

This is the Regent’s Park Theatre London production and a replica of the show will launch its international tour across Asia next year. Another production will return to London’s West End this summer, playing at Palladium Theatre.

What to do before a show at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts

The holidays are truly magical in and around the Ordway. The Ordway is decorated to the hilt so beautifully with a bright red tree for you to grab a photo in front of, along with a selfie station. Plus, an incredible piano player sharing festive holiday tunes. Savor a drink, take a picture, and enjoy the views of Rice Park!

    A CHRISTMAS CAROL TRADITION

*featured photo above of the cast of A Christmas Carol by Dan Norman

I didn’t fully appreciate traditions until the pandemic. I was even a little Scroogy about some traditions. But as human nature goes, once they stopped, I missed them. I missed looking forward to an upcoming experience and I missed the connections. It was also a reminder that nothing stays the same, not usually, so live in the present moment. In the same way, A Christmas Carol gives us important reminders, especially that we need each other. For us, attending A Christmas Carol this year was extra special because it was a tradition rekindled.

This play has never been out of fashion because it always has somthing to say.” – from Guthrie Director Addie Gorlin-Han

I love seeing A Christmas Carol early in the festive season because of the timeless message of hope. It is never too late to turn it all around, to evolve, to be kind. It not only helps others, it helps yourself. And, of course, I love the fun, laughter, and holiday songs.

Photo Credit: Dan Norman, David Beach (Ebeneezer Scrooge) and Charity Jones (Marley)

Lavina Jadhwani’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol follows closely the original novella by Charles Dickens, published in 1843. Much of the pomp and circumstance is pulled back, allowing the message to come forward. But I have to say, I missed it in the first half. I wanted a little more song and dance, but the second half totally made up for it! And as always, the ending was so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes.

Photo Credit: Dan Norman, The cast of A Christmas Carol

The acting is phenomenal, and David Beach as Ebenezer Scrooge is perfect. From his crabbiness to his transformation and movement across the stage with each ghost encounter, I couldn’t keep my eyes off him. China Brickey as Fred’s wife, Kitty, was also a joy to watch. She, too, commanded the stage.

The traditional carols and hymns brought nostalgia and warmth, and at the same time, I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see when and where the next ghost would show up! The dresses and costumes are always a highlight of the show and they shined bright against the minimal stage.

Photo Credit: Dan Norman, David Beach (Ebeneezer Scrooge) and Nathan Huberty (Ghost of Christmas Future)

Adapter Lavina Jadhwani passed away in September after a courageous battle with cancer.

“We dedicate A Christmas Carol to Lavina this year, and it’s in her gorgeous adaption of the story that I see the themes of her life: We are all responsible for each other, we can be better and we all need a bit of the Fezziwigs in our lives.” – Joseph Haj, Artistic Director of the Guthrie Theater

We loved all the decorations, selfie stations, and festive sips and snacks at the Fezziwig’s Holiday Party. They’ve transformed the Target Lounge on Level Four into a family-friendly pop-up bar!

Tip: Pre-order your drinks so you can skip the long intermission line.

This year, we decided to attend a Saturday matinee of the play and enjoy brunch at the Aster Cafe before the show. We were lucky and got a beautiful November day to walk across the Stone Arch Bridge from Aster Cafe to the Guthrie Theater. The views of Minneapolis and the Mississippi River are incredible.

The Broadway musical tour of The Notebook (based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks) premiered this week at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota, and runs through November 30, 2025.

I’ve watched the movie So. Many. Times. It struck me that it was released in 2004, because it feels like yesterday. The Notebook is an enduring story that captivates your soul. A story of ups and downs of love and life. A story of what we crave and need to live the most fulfilling lives: human connection, love, friendship, faith, and understanding.

I wondered how the musical could ever stack up against the movie, especially how it moves through eras and time, but it was done beautifully. The movement felt flawless and understandable layered perfectly with song and dance, adding depth.

Allie and Noah meet as teenagers and fall fast in love. They are 1000% in, but social expectations and Allie’s parents’ disapproval split them apart. They find each other again in their twenties, and it is like not a moment has passed. Despite the hurdles, this time, they choose each other. As years go by, Allie slowly starts to lose her memory. She writes their beautiful love story down so she’ll never forget and so Noah can read it to her. Noah never gives up faith and never lets her go.

This story resonates and is familiar for so many of us. The way they move through Allie’s memories makes you consider the importance of creating memories. Great memories. Also, finding hobbies and people that you’re passionate about and fully living in those moments.

And how present time for someone with Alzheimers can be the past. The Notebook shows us that we can honor that for them and it can help bring them back to us, even if for a moment. ❀️

The orchestra and sound were booming, and I loved it! The Ordway recently added state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems and I could really tell the difference. I wasn’t straining to hear some of the actors and not only heard the songs but felt them.

The Notebook Broadway Musical ended with an high-spirited standing ovation!

Then, in a surprise moment after Kevin McCollum, Producer of The Notebook Musical, finished speaking (which was already exciting), he introduced Mr. Nicholas Sparks. The crowd went wild. πŸ™‚ Awesome surprise by The Ordway!

Where to Eat and Park before a show at the Ordway

One of the best parts about visiting The Ordway over the holidays is how everything from Rice Park and the St. Paul Hotel to The Ordway are magically decorated. All the trees are lit up and twinkling. The pictures don’t do it justice, it feels like a wonderland, and I can’t wait for snow to add that little extra! ✨

The Ordway also have selfie stations to capture some fun photos.

Tips: Enjoy dinner or drinks at the St. Paul Grill. It is such a festive treat! I didn’t get any pictures because I was having too much fun catching up with my sister-in-law. We loved the Beef Tenderloin, Au Gratin Potatoes, and Butternut Squash. The Butternut Squash was filled with little marshmellows and tasted like the holidays in a dish. 😍

**Use the Valet Parking at the St. Paul Hotel.

Are you going to any holiday shows in the Twin Cities? I would definitely add The Notebook to the list! The Ordway also has an incredible line-up for the rest of the year including a Celtic music celebration from Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, The String Queens, and Jesus Christ Superstar. For more information on Events and Tickets, click HERE.

“Coming together as an audience from all different backgrounds and lived experiences to enjoy this universal tale of love in the face of adveristy is a powerful reminder of the unifying power of the performing arts.” – Christopher Harrington, Ordway President & CEO

Cheers to connecting and exploring local together!

  • North Shore & Grand Marais Minnesota

North Shore & Grand Marais Minnesota

    North Shore Minnesota Road Trip

It has been far too long since we visited the North Shore in our home state of Minnesota. As with most of the country, it’s been sweltering in Minneapolis, so we couldn’t wait to feel the cool air by beautiful Lady Lake Superior. And, the best part, I got to visit my long-time friend, Sara, with Urban Wild Media. We hit the popular spots on our way to Grand Marais and found some hidden gems too.

We’ve never been to the New Scenic Cafe or the world-famous Betty’s Pies, so those were both high on our list! We enjoyed the burrata with roasted tomatoes as an appetizer from the New Scenic Cafe. The cafe is so cozy and they also have tons of outdoor seating, which is really nice when traveling with our dog, Allen. He loved all the space to walk around and stretch his legs.

Then it was off to Betty’s for some burgers. We didn’t get any pie. I know, I know, we’re crazy, but we will try it next time. The burgers were fantastic and they offer gluten-free buns. Thank you, Betty! We laughed so hard when we saw the staff wearing t-shirts that said “I’m not Betty” – I’m sure they get asked that question ALL THE TIME.

Things to Do and See on the North Shore Minnesota

We tried stopping at Gooseberry Falls along the North Shore, but it felt too busy and chaotic with the dog. So, we headed to Iona’s Beach to see the pink/red rocks (watch for Iona’s Beach at mile marker 42). Then, Sara recommended that we drive up to see the Palisade Head overlook. We are so glad that she did! It is technically in Tettegouche State Park but has its own turn-off and signage, so keep a lookout for that – it can sneak up on you. This is a definite must-do. The steep hill going up to the overlook is fun and exciting; you can either walk or drive -it’s only about 1/2 mile. The views are spectacular.

We also made a quick stop at the adorable Schroeder’s Baking Company for a root beer float.

Lodging and Restaurants in Grand Marais

We were so excited to arrive in Grand Marais, our final destination for a few days. This was the first time visiting for both of us. In fact, before this trip, the furthest we had driven up the North Shore was Lutsen. We fell in love with Grand Marais. Again, I know, I know – who doesn’t, right? We stayed at the Best Western Plus – Superior Inn. This location is excellent, everything we needed was within walking distance, and the lake views are unbeatable. Allen loved our little patio.

Hotel on the North Shore in Grand Marais, Minnesota
    Artist's Point Grand Marais Minnesota
    View of Artist’s Point

The first night we had trouble finding food-to-go. Across the country, the restaurants are short-staffed, so if they are slammed, don’t expect to-go food. A reminder to think ahead and be respectful, hospitality teams are working so hard and doing their best.

These are always the fun moments that I remember because we end up doing something different. The Cook County Co-op is right next to the Best Western. We went there for some snacks (local insider tip from Sara – they have the best cookies!), and then we remembered that the hotel offers a nightly happy hour with pizza, salads, and more. They even have gluten-free crusts. This pizza was delicious!!

    Grand Marais Things To Do

The next day, we explored the town, and Sara took me to some of her favorite spots. Did you know that this lighthouse was constructed and first lit in 1922? There is so much history here and a lot to learn about Minnesota’s roots. I loved the views of the Sawtooth Mountains from the lighthouse. Well, I should say ALL the views. The town, Lake Superior, each direction offers a beautiful view. The town is filled with charming local shops and art galleries. Plus, so many unique historic buildings and fun murals.

    Lighthouse in Grand Marais Minnesota

Of course, I had to stop at World’s Best Donuts. They have yummy gluten-free muffins and one of the best gluten-free trail cookies I’ve ever tasted. Plus, they make cute tail waggin’ dog treats! I was over the top excited when I saw that Java Moose had huckleberry lemonade. If you read my Glacier National Park blog post, you know how I feel about huckleberries. πŸ˜‰

    Grand Marais North Shore Minnesota

A few other favorite restaurants – Gunflint Tavern (awesome ribs and mouthwatering mashed potatoes) and Sydney’s for frozen custard (Thank you, Sara!). Next time, I want to try the wood-fired pizza at Sydney’s – it looked amazing.

Before we left the next morning, I had to get one more cup of Alakef Coffee (locally roasted in Duluth) from Java Moose and take in this beautiful sunrise over Lake Superior. I miss her and Sara already!

Next, we headed up the Gunflint Trail and stayed at Poplar Haus. We can’t wait to visit again! Read more about our Poplar Haus stay: https://tracyseesstuff.com/2021/08/09/gunflint-trail-minnesota/.
