rocky cliff on the north shore in minnesota

We highly recommend leaving early and taking your time driving along the North Shore. There are so many interesting places to stop and beautiful things to see. My favorite is when you hit Duluth and see the big lake for the first time! Your eyes have to adjust when you see just how far Lake Superior spans. At nearly 32,000 square miles, it is the world’s largest freshwater lake.Β The North Shore Scenic Drive runs 154 miles between Duluth and Canada, following Lake Superior, and is designated as an All-American Road.

While driving the North Shore, you will see water that melts into the horizon, forests, wild flowers, pebbled beaches where you can search for beach glass, agates, and fossils, you’ll find lighthouses, high rocky cliffs, and 8 state parks! Make sure to watch for wildlife.

The Aerial Lift Bridge and Canal Park in Duluth, Minnesota. Hang out, stretch your legs, and watch the ships come through.

Brighton Beach Park has been there since 1922 and is a great spot to rock hunt or have a picnic. The park is also the start of Duluth’s Lakewalk. An 8 mile paved trail that will take you to Bayfront Park, mostly along the shore.

New Scenic Cafe is a cozy cafe with delicious high-end food and tons of outdoor seating.

Great! Lakes Candy Kitchen offers a ton of yummy candy! They are 3rd and 4th generation candy makers using 100 year old family recipes. There is a short fun bear trail, outdoor art, and picnic tables.

Russ Kendall’s Smoke House – we LOVE their specialty sugar-cured salmon!

Castle Danger Brewing offers delicious craft beer. Grab a growler to enjoy with your smoked salmon. We love hanging out here, plenty of space, dog-friendly, and outdoor games.Β Favorites Beers include George Hunter Stout and the Lager Royale!

After stopping at Castle Danger Brewing, take a walk at Agate Bay Trail.

Ready for coffee? Stop at Cedar Coffee Company. Not too far off 61 and tucked in the woods; it’s a fantastic escape. Their coffee, teas, and food are fantastic! Plus a dog-friendly patio.

Betty’s Pies OR Rustic Inn Cafe – Betty’s is famous but we really love the pies at Rustic Inn! Betty’s is a place that you have to experience but make sure to try the pie at Rustic too.

    Rustic Inn Cafe Pie

Find the famous Black Beach in Silver Bay. Make sure to read and learn how it was actually formed!

Schroeder’s Baking Company has a lot of space to relax and enjoy a root beer floats. Don’t eat too much because you’re almost to Bluefin Bay!

You’ve arrived at Bluefin Bay! Bluefin Bay restaurants offer amazing views steps from the lake. Their 3 unique dining experiences include Bluefin Grille, Coho Cafe and Bakery, and Waves Cafe.

8 State Parks on the North Shore in Minnesota

Gooseberry Falls State Park is a popular stop to see waterfalls. It is home to five spectacular waterfalls, along with scenic, accessible hiking trails. Explore the park’s rugged shoreline and the visitor center, including a theater, interpretive displays, a trail center, a nature store, modern bathrooms, and vending machines. This stop will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to hit the road again.

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park feels like you stepped into a piece of art. The historic Split Rock Lighthouse has stood as a beacon of safety for ships and travelers along the shoreline since 1910. Tour the lighthouse, enjoy hiking trails, campsites and picnic areas, fishing docks, and pebble beaches.

Tettegouche State Park is filled with soaring views of Lake Superior including Palisade Head. Experience sea caves, a sea stack, trails, beaches, rivers, and waterfalls. You can walk just a few city blocks from the visitor center to a gravel beach where the Baptism River meets Lake Superior. Whether you love fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, or just enjoying nature, this is an unforgettable experience.

George Crosby Manitou State Park is serene, with over 1,000 acres offering more beautiful views of Lake Superior and old-growth forests. Visitors can enjoy the Cascades of the Manitou River after a gorgeous hike through a rugged landscape. Plus, hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and more.

Temperance River State Park is nestled among rolling hills, lush forests, and a winding river. Enjoy scenic overlooks along the river. Even if you only have an hour, you can hike riverside trails along the impressive Temperance River Gorge and see waterfalls. The park is home to various wildlife, including bald eagles, osprey, and deer.

Cascade River State Park is situated along the Sawtooth Mountains and is known for its breathtaking views of Lake Superior, the Cascade River gorge, and the surrounding forests. Discover the Cascades, a series of five small waterfalls, and the Cascade Falls on a half-mile hike on the Cascade River Lower Loop. Enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, bird watching, and photography.

Judge C.R. Magney State Park is well known for its solitude and the famous Devil’s Kettle waterfall! The most popular hike follows the Brule River upstream to Devil’s Kettle, where the river splits around a mass of volcanic rock. Do you know the mystery around Devil’s Kettle? There are also several trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. The park also offers trout fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and access to the Superior Hiking Trail.

Grand Portage State Park is located on the Canada-United States border. It is also home to Minnesota’s highest waterfall! The High Falls Trail is an easy, one-mile round-trip hike to see the waterfall. The park features wild and beautiful landscapes, including the High Falls of the Pigeon River, cascading waterfalls, and a variety of wildlife habitats.Β

Happy travels to the North Shore and please let us know if you have questions.

Adopt a Rescue Dog – Ruff Start Rescue

We are partnering with Ruff Start Rescue and Best Friends Animal Society to feature one adoptable dog each month. We are passionate about rescue dogs and have two of our own, the Explore Local Together mascots, Allen and Carol.

    Meet Phyllis!

Phyllis is a sassy senior! She is looking for that special someone who understands aging isn’t always easy, she may not feel the cutest and therefore needs plenty of alone time, lots of naps, and tons of good food and treats. I feel ya, Phyllis! πŸ˜‰

Phyllis prefers short walks and easy access to her food and potty. She prefers to sleep near you so she knows you’re sticking around and likes to be tucked in. Phyllis does snore (as any self respecting bulldog does) so earplugs may be necessary if she sleeps right next to you. She likes to talk and will tell you when she wants attention, when she is hungry, when she has to potty and most importantly when she needs to be tucked in. Squeaky toys are her favorite!

She is part of their β€œSeniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.

If you think you are that special someone for Phyllis – visit her profile HERE and fill out an application.

    Lodging in Sedona, Arizona

    VRBO: Red Mountain Shadows Retreat

We love this VRBO in West Sedona because it’s in a neighborhood but still close to everything and not part of the craziness of Uptown. It’s a two bed/two bath, lovely kitchen, well-appointed, with a gorgeous backyard. Plus, it’s super dog-friendly! There’s even a private area for the dogs in the yard with a doggie door to the house.

Bed & Breakfast: Alma De Sedona Inn

A lovely spot and location. Mornings at Alma De Sedona Inn start with their famous breakfasts. I’m not a “bed and breakfast” person but this was amazing and we felt like we had our own space. They offer freshly brewed coffee along with juice and warm homemade muffins and scones. You can smell them baking when you wake up! Next is the main course which is different every day and made from scratch.

If you are seeking spirituality or alone time to connect with yourself and nature, Alma De Sedona Inn, offers a Labyrinth and Medicine Wheel. Their gardens are serene and this is such a nice amenity.

Hotel: Sedona ReΓ‘l Inn and Suites

Spacious, clean, dog friendly hotel with a pool – excellent breakfast – and big fenced picnic/dog play area.

Ace has been in rescue since May 2022. He is a Mixed American Staffordshire Terrier and American Bulldog and is a little over 3 years old.

He is all about the good vibesβ€”treats, lap snuggles (he’s convinced he can fit on any lap even though he weighs 96 pounds), family car rides, and yard shenanigans. He loves relaxing, walks, playing with toys and chewing on bones. He’ll do best in a home with older kids (maybe above 10) and is not the biggest fan of cats. He has lived with dogs in the past and have done well.

  • Spend the day in Stillwater, Minnesota

Spend the day in Stillwater, Minnesota

Spend the day in Stillwater, Minnesota, and enjoy delicious food, unique shopping, and beautiful views of the St. Croix River!

Many times, we think we need a big getaway. After spending the day in Stillwater, Minnesota, I was reminded that one day away or even a half day is revitalizing. So often, we talk about self-care, and we don’t discuss travel being part of it. I see too much of the 10-step nightly face routine. πŸ˜‰ Travel is expensive but so are women’s beauty products. It’s about prioritizing what works for you and getting creative. It doesn’t have to be a 10-day trip to an exotic island to have the same effects. A smaller dose of relaxation and filling your soul is worth it!

A Day Trip to Discover Stillwater

    Best Small Towns in Minnesota

We started the day at Feller Restaurant for lunch. We really loved the cozy atmosphere with comfortable bar stools and big windows that look out to Stillwater’s historic Main Street. We enjoyed the Nicoise Salad and Foragers Crostini but the star of the show was the Bacon Wrapped Dates! They were so delicious. They deserve another close up picture!

We also really liked Pinch ‘n Rub Spice and Tea Hub. When you walk in, the smells are divine.

Things to do in Stillwater, Minnesota

After lunch, we walked and shopped Main Street. Our favorite stop was the Stillwater Olive Oil Company, where you can sample a variety of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It’s a unique tasting experience and so yummy! The service was fantastic too with the staff being super helpful and answering all of our questions.

Next, we walked down by the St. Croix River and took in all the views. The Stillwater historic lift bridge is such a sight to see and fun to walk across to take in the river views and downtown Stillwater.

Last, we had a delicious cup of coffee at Made Coffee before hitting the road. My favorite is a hot oat milk miel. The weather in Minnesota has been so crazy warm so it was nice to sit by the fire and then inside the cozy Lora Hotel. Don’t forget, a simple day trip with a friend can make a huge difference in your mental health.

Another historic small town to visit in Minnesota is Afton! Read more > https://tracyseesstuff.com/2022/08/04/afton-minnesota/.

  • Let’s help homeless pets

    Let’s help homeless pets

Every little bit makes a difference. There are many ways to help, including sharing information, buying unique gifts from the Best Friends Animal Society store, donating, volunteering, fostering, or adopting.

Help Homeless Pets on Giving Tuesday and Beyond.

Giving Tuesday is an international day of giving and an opportunity to support the organizations that you love. Together we can end the killing of cats and dogs in America’s shelters. During Giving Tuesday, every donation to Best Friends Animal Society will be triple matched up to $1 Million! Your donation ensures warm beds, healthy meals, and lifesaving medical care to the animals at Best Friends and to pets in shelters across the country.

    Best Friends Animal Society

Best Friends Animal Society is the largest no-kill sanctuary in the Nation. Their mission is to Save Them All and live in a world with no homeless pets. The sanctuary is home to over 1600 homeless pets including dogs, cats, pigs, horses, birds, and more. The Best Friends’ team works hard towards their goal through creative programs such as the spay and neuter program. Including, reaching far beyond the sanctuary teaming up with shelters all over the country.

Above is our girl, Utah. She was part of our first experience at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. We drove through Utah on our way home after visiting Las Vegas and stopped for a sanctuary tour. Of course, we couldn’t resist that face and adopted her that day. Since 2016, we’ve visited the sanctuary over ten times to volunteer. It is a life-changing and beautiful place to volunteer plus learn more about their initiative. It is a must-add to your bucket list if you love animals.

We have adopted three dogs from Best Friends Animal Society over the past eight years. Utah, Allen, and Carol have changed our lives for the better. Sadly, Utah crossed the rainbow bridge in 2020. She was a gentle force that is greatly missed. Allen and Carol continue to bring light to our lives through unconditional love, laughter, play, adventure, routine, and steady companionship.

You can read more about Utah and Allen‘s adoptions by clicking their names.

We like to say that we save them, but I believe that they save us. 🧑

Join me in giving homeless cats and dogs a second chance this holiday season! Triple your impact for animals and make a gift today at https://bfas.io/igt23.

  • Medora – North Dakota

    Medora – North Dakota

Have you been to Medora, North Dakota? What a kick! This area is rich in history and nature but also offers unique activities for the whole family from the Pitchfork Steak Fondue Dinner to the Medora Musical.

Medora is located at the entrance of Theodore Roosevelt National Park with beautiful views of the North Dakota Badlands. Medora was founded in 1883 which is also the year that the young Theodore Roosevelt visited this region to hunt bison. Can you imagine the feeling of seeing this amazing landscape for the first time?

    Photo Aug 06, 3 51 24 PM

The Pitchfork Steak Fondue Dinner was delicious and yes, the steaks are truly cooked on pitchforks! Our steaks were cooked perfectly and we appreciated all the sides which included fresh fruit, salad, coleslaw, vegetables, baked beans, garlic toast, baked potatoes, brownies, and cinnamon-sugar donuts plus coffee and lemonade. You can purchase wine or beer at the bar.

It was busy (see picture below) but they are super organized and the line moved quickly. There’s also plenty of tables in either the shade or the sun so you don’t have to feel rushed for a seat. We were impressed with all the staff walking around asking if we needed anything and clearing our plates.

They have a live band (The Coal Diggers from the Medora Musical) playing good ole western music. The music combined with the views and eating outside, it’s a night to remember!

We walked around the bluff after dinner and took in all the views. Both the Pitchfork Steak Fondue Dinner and the Medora Musical are located up on the bluff. The drive up is only 5 minutes from town and they do offer shuttles.

We stayed at the historic Rough Riders Hotel in the heart of downtown Medora. The rooms were very nice. The three C’s…convenient, clean and comfortable. πŸ˜‰ Plus, there is a wonderful private library filled with everything Theodore Roosevelt for you to enjoy.

Breakfast is always my favorite meal and The Farmhouse Cafe perfectly satisfied all my cravings from the coffee to chocolate syrup on the pancakes! Check out the Redneck Breakfast below, that’s a huge piece of ham on top of sausage with an over-easy egg and cheesy hashbrowns. Holy moly so good! The service was top notch and I found the most unique gifts here.

There are many cute shops in town and we loved the Badlands Shooting Gallery. There is also an art gallery, zipline, children’s park, and the beautiful Bully Pulpit golf course. PLUS, all the adventuring at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park!

There’s so much to do in Medora and I know we barely scratched the surface. Check out Look About Lindsey’s blog “Why you need to stay more than one night in Medora North Dakota“. She’s an awesome travel blogger and we love following her adventures.

    Photo Aug 06, 4 54 22 PM

If you live in the Twin Cities, getting to Medora is an easy 8-hour drive. Fargo is approximately at the halfway point, so it’s a convenient stop to take a break for lunch or to spend the night. We stopped at the WΓΌrst Bier Hall in downtown Fargo for lunch. The locally-made polish sausage was amazing and Terry loved the local beer. Terry will be sharing more in his Tuesdays with Terry post.

We look forward to seeing you again, Medora!
