The Abominables – Children’s Theatre Company

    z-1-2

The Abominables opens at Children’s Theatre this weekend! I had the opportunity to go backstage and I’m always blown away by the work and passion that goes into these shows. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a diverse and wonderful theater community here in the Twin Cities.

The Abominables is the very first Minnesota Hockey Musical! Produced in association with New York City’s extraordinary theatre company The Civilians. The musical is written and directed by Steve Cosson with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman and choreography by Joe Chvala.

“This hilarious musical is full of heart and insight into our pursuit of success and how we define it.” – Peter C. Brosius, Artistic Director.

A cool note: This musical was created over a four year period, the development included interviews with over 75 hockey players, coaches and family members across Minnesota at tournaments, games and practices.

The Stage and Ice Rink – The Actors are on skates throughout the show! Can you imagine?z-1-4

    From Children’s Theatre Company:

Rink rats, hockey moms, tournament weekends and the quest to play your best – It’s tryout season in the Great State of Hockey! Mitch has always played on the A team for the Prairie Lake Blizzards – they are his guys – they’ve played together forever, but he’s worried this could be the year he gets sent down to the B team. When a new “kid” appears at Bantam tryouts, things go from bad to worse. From the land of ice and nice comes the first Minnesota hockey musical! Will you love it? You betcha!

As I was in the process of writing this blog, I am so sad to tell you that Michael Friedman passed away. This is a huge loss to the artistic and theater community. Here is the statement from Children’s Theatre.

Statement from Children’s Theatre Company on the passing of Michael Friedman

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news with our community on the passing of composer Michael Friedman who died on September 9th at the age of 41. Michael was the composer and lyricist of The Abominables, which is to receive its world premiere performance on Friday, September 15 in our UnitedHealth Group Stage.  The Abominables was commissioned by CTC in 2011 and is written by Michael and his longtime collaborator Steve Cosson of The Civilians.

“Michael was an extraordinary artist and an incredible human being,” said Artistic Director Peter C. Brosius. “He was brilliant, wildly funny and so deeply caring about other people. Michael was such a joy; his boundless energy, his infectious enthusiasm and his ability to be so fearlessly self-critical and clear eyed in the pursuit of something truly extraordinary made him utterly unique. He never rested, was a brave explorer of new possibilities and was one of the most creative forces you would ever meet. We deeply mourn his passing and feel truly blessed to have had this opportunity to work closely with him and bring his work to our audiences.”

While we are deeply saddened that Michael will not see the world premiere, we feel fortunate to be able to bring one of his final works of art to the stage and share his artistry with the community, in particular, with children and families. We dedicate the performances of The Abominables to Michael Friedman. For more information about The Abominables, please go to childrenstheatre.org.

It’s so wonderful to see these historic buildings in Minneapolis and St. Paul being restored and brought back to life. Here are a few shots from a recent social media photo shoot at C&E Living (Flats & Lofts).

    From the C&E Living website:

ROOTED IN HISTORY — GREEN & GROWING
The award-winning C&E community was established in 2012 with the opening of the repurposed, historic Chittenden & Eastman furniture warehouse, now known as C&E LOFTS. Today, C&E is poised to flourish with addition of C&E FLATS, an eco-friendly building atop a historic warehouse.

C&E Living offers a variety of unique units and is perfectly located between Minneapolis and St. Paul. My favorite part is the community spaces.

Tullibee – Hewing Hotel – Gentleman Forager

Almost too pretty to eat! These are Gentleman Forager‘s local, wild, foraged mushrooms served at Tullibee. Tullibee is part of the Hewing Hotel located in the Minneapolis North Loop neighborhood. It is one of my favorite spots for brunch so I was over the moon to have the opportunity to capture some food photos.

I started working with Gentleman Forager (Mike Kempenich) after attending one of Mike’s guided morel hunts. You can read about that experience by clicking HERE.

Gentleman Forager provides the freshest, most beautiful, mushrooms and wild plants in the forests to the tables of restaurants, innovative chefs, and mushroom lovers. Mike also believes education is a key component to changing the way people think about what they eat and where it comes from. Gentleman Forager teaches people to identify many species of wild Minnesota mushrooms and organizes weekend festivals in the woods. He also plans many “wild” food dinners and events with Minneapolis restaurants and chefs throughout the year. The next festival is the Lobster Mushroom Jamboree! You can find details either on the website at www.gentlemanforager.com or Facebook page. Photo Jul 30, 8 16 54 AMChef Bradley Day was a blast to work with! So creative and so passionate about food. He is a native Australian with an extensive résumé. He spent years in London and New York at high-end restaurants and is now excited about being part of the Minneapolis community. He enjoys working with fresh, local ingredients and is creating beautiful dishes with the Gentleman Forager mushrooms and microgreens. You can read more about him by clicking HERE.

Mill City Summer Opera & Project SUCCESS

ps-1-15Fernanda Ghi teaching the kids how to tango!

Mill City Summer Opera is an annual outdoor world-class opera performed at the beautiful Mill City Museum. This year, due to updates being done at the museum, it was performed at another awesome non-traditional venue, the Machine Shop. A couple days before opening night they partnered with Project SUCCESS for an event.

Project SUCCESS‘s mission is to motivate and inspire young people to dream about the future, help them take steps to get there and give them the tools they need to achieve their goals. ps-1-10I would have loved to be involved in this program when I was young. Such a wonderful opportunity for these kids to see behind the scenes. They got to meet and talk with the artistic and production staff and the cast.

    Angell Wedding

w-1-26It’s been such a fun summer of photo shoots! I loved being second shooter to Jill of Shine On Photos for this destination wedding. The wedding was in Wabasha, MN and the reception was at the Hidden Meadow and Barn in Lake Pepin, WI. The Hidden Meadow and Barn is a photographer’s dream location to shoot with such amazing backdrops. w-1-44Yes, that IS a double rainbow! We were so fortunate that after a short rainfall, this happened! The wedding party, guests and Jill took big yellow buses from the church to the reception and Jill captured beautiful photos along the way. She has a great eye for the perfect background. I followed with our equipment and when the buses stopped, I would run up to shoot different angles. I ended up with the nickname – “storm chaser” 🙂 a-1-4w-1-18a-1-2a-1-5w-1-16w-1-30Such a beautiful couple, family and service! w-1-22w-1-19w-1-15a-1-7w-1-25w-1-24w-1-32w-1-38 How cute are these littles?  w-1-10w-1-3w-1-5w-1-6w-1-27I hope to come back to this location soon. a-1-6w-1-37w-1-31The perfect ending….w-1-45Thank you for the adventure, Jill!
